Running late we're into the busiest time for classical guitar events, beginning Wednesday noon (today) with the Guitarreando guitar ensemble who appear in a free concert in Pasadena This group of 21 German secondary school students are here as part of an exchange program with the Pasadena Conservatory of Music, they'll perform again with the LA Youth Guitar Orchestra in a free concert on Friday evening at CalTech On Wednesday evening Rene Izquierdo will perform in Camarillo at the monthly meeting of the Ventura County Classical Guitar Society (free), and on Friday evening Olivia Chang performs flamenco with a dancer and lecturer as part of the free events of the Taste Of Spain festival in Altadena
There's another free recital on Friday evening as the OCGC's esteemed president Payam Larijani performs at UCLA, joined in some duos by another UCLA graduate, Tiffany Wu Then on Saturday evening Irina Kirchner and Alfonso Montes, teachers (and a guitar duo) who are accompanying the Guitarreando group from Stuttgart, will be joined by the stellar Scott Tennant in a recital in Pasadena (You can hear John Schneider interview Kirchner and Montes, and some of the the ensemble's playing, on Thursday at 11 AM on KPFK-FM, 90 7) Also on Saturday the American Guitar Society holds its monthly meeting in Valley Glen, and on Sunday Jack Cimo, USC graduate and one fourth of the brilliant Helios Quartet, will appear in a recital Beverly Hills
And a heads-up for three Pepe Romero Master Classes at USC the following week, two on Monday and another on Tuesday evening, all free to auditors Observing his classes is always hugely educational as well as entertaining
